The buddy list

Post by Clay »

What does it do exactly, other than tell me when certain people are online?

Quick list of people you tend to send messages to?

Its special power is to be a pain in the ass:

Basically not much since it became a pop-up; the "ignore" list is more useful. And vB3 improved some in other ways since 2005 and the 3.0.x. branch, thankfully...

The developers seem keen to use the "buddy" list functionality to add more Web 2.0 and Facebook-alike features in future -- http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=250084

The diminishing usefulness of the control panel is why I've tried to simplify the main forum index enough for it to be a quick browse for new threads.

Uhm... I've not checked with the new software, but on the old board you could use it to send bulk PMs.

If the buddy list can do that with the new software, I haven't figured out how yet. I'm pretty sure the new board will let you put more than one name into the 'Recipient' box, though, so we don't really need the buddy list to shoot the same PM to multiple people anymore.

Incidentally, I seem to recall the limit for number of people can be set per usergroup, so if the RPG coordinators want a higher number just ask...

What's the default limit set to?

We rarely do much mass PMing (I think the last one I sent out myself was in '05 or '06) so I'm not sure there's much cause for it right now. Now that it's a bit easier to send PMs to multiple people I can see a couple things that we could use it for (boilerplate 'your character claims have expired'-type messages, stuff like that) but nothing that we'd ever need to send to more than half a dozen people at once.

As of now, it should be 5 for ordinary members and unlimited for everyone else.
