How are Gobots and Transformers related?

I was searching the site, and didn't find anything obvious which answered this question yet. I know they began as two separate things completely, but has TF bought out Gobots? Megatron's mini-con in Armada was Leader-1, and the Playskool Transformers clearly say Gobots while bearing Autobot symbols. Anyone know what happened here?

All of the toys are still owned by Bandai, but when Tonka went under, Hasbro bought the rights to the names and whatnot.

That's why G2 Spychangers are called gobots, Megatron's minicon was Leader-1, etc.
