Where did the name: CONVOY come from?

Post by dai-atlas2000 »

Now maybe this is a daft question, but I'll ask it anyway as I've wanted to know the answer....

Why do the Japanese call Optimus Prime - CONVOY? Is this how the name translates into the Japanese language...or is there another reason??

It's to do with that truckin' song... Basically the Japanese are big Peckinpah fans, and Takara saw the chance to cash in on the success of Bloody Sam's abysmal Kris "acting talent of a door" Kristofferson/Ali "it's all in the eyebrows" MacGraw smash...

Nah, seriosuly, the first explanation is just what Brend told me. Scout's honour [or, to bring our American friends in on the conversation without confusing them, scout's honor].

However, it seems likely that Convoy seemed a much more logical and snappy name from a truck TF than some latin gibberish. It's simply a name-change, like Jawbreaker and Overrbite.

May also have something to do with the fact that the Prime-mold Diaclone toy was called Battle Convoy...

Yeah, "Convoy" is an old time country song,
it also means a group of military trucks, and the Japanese probably used it because to them it sounds foreign and cool.

Although the truth is blatent what flec said, I much prefer the Kris "somehow back from the dead in Blade 2" Kristofferson theory.

In the translation of headmasters that I've seen, he is called Cheif Convoy. A convoy is multiple vehicles, so he's the Cheif of the Convoy of Autobots.

This also has probably something to do with Optimus being damn difficult to pronounce in Japanese.

Ok, perhaps I was slightly mistaken... but Opuchimasu Puraimu (or whatever) doesn't sound as fluent as Convoy, right? Image

I have never seen 'Convoy' and I never intend to. Convoy comes from the original Diaclone name, as was said before

There is something about the word 'chief' now where after 'four warriors from the sky' headmaster episode I allways think of 'And the long exiled chief of the decepticons' and burst out laughing.Dont know why but that line is utterly hillarous Image

Is "Convoy" a translation?

Post by Starfield »

So, is "Convoy" an English translation of whatever the Japanese word is for his name, or did the Japanese borrow the word convoy and that is how they say it in Japan? Or is it a nonsense word as far as the Japanese are concerned?

The last makes the most sense to me. Otherwise it is pretty funny. Jet Convoy being my favorite.

Those ones.

Much in the way that "Optimus Prime" is Latin words borrowed for his English name, "Convoy" is English words borrowed for his Japanese name.

Though I wouldn't say it's a nonsense word for the Japanese. A quick bit of translation and they know it basically means "procession of trucks". Just like a quick bit of translation from Latin gives his English name as basically meaning "Best First".

His name's borrowed words no matter which language we're on.
