It was a sight that sent many running - a completely non-descript hover transport gliding into the area and setting down. Just a year earlier and it meant the underground illegal sporting ring was looking for new gladiators for some gruesome event, but in recent days it had come to mean something perhaps even more terrifying to some - and the Decepticon logos on the side of the transport said it all.

As the vehicle pulled into the area this time, most of the civilians were sent scuttling into the nearest cover or speeding up their pace to clear out of the immediate view and reach of the Vehicons that were soon emerging from the back of the vehicle, but one form in particular didn't budge an inch even as the vehicle had set down just across from him. Dirge even smiled a bit as the forms started to emerge - an expression that broadened into a grin as a non-vehicon form stepped down and then made a startled jerk as he took note of Dirge's presence.

Dirge knew this one - one of his first few victims from when he started working for Deathasaurus. He'd been taking a good couple of days working over the small-time thief that he'd caught breaking onto the property, which had ended only because his employer needed Dirge to accompany him on a trip and had made him give up his toy. Judging from the datapad the smaller mech was holding, he was still small-time, but he did have something that Dirge didn't have, and wanted - Decepticon logos.

"Got some business out here?" Dirge asked casually.

The smaller Decepticon scowled at him. "Don't you have a penthouse to babysit? Or did your 'friend' fire you?"

"You're lucky the boss had to go on his outing, or we would've become real good friends," Dirge answered, stepping towards the Con and causing him to backpedal a few steps. It made Dirge smile even more, but he wasn't here to shake up the underling. "Where's your boss, pipsqueak? We got business to discuss."

Predacon shurgged. "Decorum? Not my thing, Obby. So it's settled! I'll give him a shout."

Switching on his comm, he said, "Yo Megatron! We're bored. When do we get to kill stuff?"

Megatron's reply was preceded by an obvious sigh. "I want Obsidian and his troops to wait for my signal," he said, clearly annoyed. "But we need a forward vanguard to move into the city and test the Autobot's defences. You just volunteered. Take your scientist friends and a few troopers, and try not to get yourselves killed. Megatron out."

Predacon grinned. "Score! Scorps, Tarannie, mount up! We've got fighting to do!" Looking over at Obsidian, he practically gloated, "See, if you'd asked he'd have let you go play too." He made a show of looking around at their troops, then asked, "Who should we take with us? Thrust? Some Vehicons? Sixshot's not great for scout duty."

"The Creators?" Brick shook his head. "They're not afraid of anything! How could they? They made us, after all. How could anything hurt them? But Thrust or the rest? Heck, I don't think they'll even come within hailing distance of you unless someone orders them. And can you blame 'em? You're way better than they are."

Skyquake stomped out of the transport, shooting a glare at the trooper who had been talking with Dirge. Although he had a faceplate, he still managed to give the impression of a perpetual scowl.

"You!" he barked. "You are supposed to be recruiting, not cowering away from random passerby."

He waved with one of his hands, and several squads of Vehicons fanned out to form a perimeter, each squad led by one of the Decepticons' newer recruits. Almost instantly, Skyquake's hand balled back up into a fist.

"And you!" he said angrily to Dirge. "Are you looking for a beating? Or are you just a fool?" His optics narrowed and he growled threateningly. "Or are you trying to volunteer for the Decepticon army? Because if you are, it would have been a lot more convenient to fly down to one of our recruitment offices."

Tarantulas shook his head. "You should have done so sooner," he said to Predacon suggested to contact Megatron. "Since when do we answer to someone else anyway?" he continued as he glanced towards Obsidian for a bit.

Then Predacon gave them the good news and Tarantulas started cackling like only he could. "Yes! These Autobots won't know what hit them!"

Thundercracker left the bridge and headed towards the airlock, presumably followed by Starscream. "You know your way around Iacon, right?," he rhetorically asked his fellow Seeker as he headed towards the airlock.

"If I activate my sonic boom generator to disorientate the Autobots, we should be able to break Skywarp out of there in no time. They'll be too busy trying to figure out what happened or too shocked that they're actually under attack," Thundercracker said with a smile on his face.

"Try not to blow yourselves up." Obsidian said in a neutral, polite manner. His red optics followed Predacon as he moved away, as Tarantulas dismissed him rudely, but his expression betrayed nothing. He's dealt with people like them before, people who think they're above the law.

The problem is... well, they're usually far more sane than this group of unstable maniacs.

Useful, for sure, but they need a tighter leash.

And more respect.

Obsidian let out a soft sigh. He's been... declining, he supposed. He did nothing but invade a city-state, whereas a bunch of nobodies have done exactly the same as he did. He prided himself for strategy, yet all he had done was nothing that the soldiers there couldn't do themselves.

He felt old.

Scorponok snorted as he turned away from Obsidian. "Finally." The former Senator growled in an irritated manner. He replied at Tarantulas. "We don't. That's why the old fossil gets to babysit the troops and wait while we do something more productive."

Scorponok smiled. "We are to scout, no? I have some... little creations which would be perfect to get past the defenses. They would serve as a good distraction while Tarantulas sends his little spy camera bugs into the city. The Mole Vehicons that broke into Iacon -- shame they died -- would work well too."

"They cannot be hurt." Sixshot nodded at Brick. "They made us."

The sixchanger noted this, and turned his gaze towards Thrust, somewhere in the distance. "I... see your point. I am not sure what to make of it, however."

Tarantulas transformed into his Cybertronian motorcycle mode and twelve Spyders appeared from under the ground and attached themselves to him. "Save your false concerns for those that need them," he said to Obsidian. "We can manage just fine without you."

"Some Vehicons should be enough," Tarantulas said to Predacon. "We're a scouting party after all. Though I suppose some new recruits could tag along if they want to."

Tarantulas agreed with Scorponok. "Yes. Your toys will create a nice enough distraction for my Spyders to infiltrate the city."

OOC: So you people thought I'd pick Scorponok and not at least give the Bay version a shout-out?

Post by Blackjack »

Scorponok kept in pace with Tarantulas' alternate mode with his long strides, nodding as he raised one massive purple claw. Panels opened on his shoulder and a small, silver-and-brown thing that looked like a lot like Scorponok's alternate mode -- albeit with eight jointed legs instead of treads -- scuttled out. Rows and rows of gears formed a tunnel through the drone's center, and the two chunky claws it had ended up in protrusions that whirled around itself.

As it reached the tip of Scorponok's claw and made a soft cooing noise, the long tail that had been trailing behind it reared up and deployed into a trident-like shape.

Compared to Scorponok, the thing was relatively smallish, but it was nearly as large as Tarantulas' alternate mode.

Scorponok smiled.

"I have yet to decide what to call them." He told Tarantulas. "But they will suffice as a distraction. They can do distraction pretty well, in fact."

"You mean wait while some data-cruncher decides if I should be front-line fodder or become some scientist's labrat," Dirge answered cooly, if not amused. He was now leaning against the transport, as though he had all day to hang out. He didn't appear intimidated at all by Skyquake - he knew the show the guy was putting on, having done it himself so many times with new security staff. "Let's put aside the posturing for the grunts. If I wanted just any position in the ranks, I could've got my employer to get me reassigned wherever - he's got direct connections to Megatron. I wanna show my stuff, and get in where I can use my talents to their maximum."

"Why aren't you still with Deathsaurus?" One of the Vehicons would asked that was still milling around, waiting for their unit leader (the one Skyquake had chewed out) to finish making his preparations, thanks to the distraction Dirge had presented.

Dirge himself gave an unconcerned shrug. "Holed up in one of his more secure facilities while he chills. Easy job body-guarding him there, and made me bored out of my mind."

Dirge was distracted from talking to Skyquake as the nearby Decepticon cursed under his breath. "He still hasn't been caught?"

If for no other reason than their history, Dirge wanted to see what was more upsetting to this grunt than his own fearsome presence. It was easy enough to reach over and take the datapad from the smaller mech, taking a quick glance at it to see what seemed to be a list of potential conscripts and their known locations. One name was highlighted in particular, what the grunt had been looking at.

"Knock Out? You got lousy choices in soldiers. Though I suppose anyone would be better than you," Dirge barbed at the smaller Decepticon. The grunt gave him a vicious scowl as he snatched the datapad back.

"He's being conscripted for medical services, if you must know. We've had a few anonymous tip-offs on his location before, but it never pans out. He's always managed to pack up and slip off before we get there."

"Ever figure that's because he's the one giving the tips? Him or one of his happy customers," Dirge leaned back over to the grunt as though inspecting you. "You look like you're one of his unhappy customers. Have him botch some work on you?"

Judging from the snarl he received, Dirge was right on the mark. "How would you know, brute?"

"I worked for him before Deathy," Dirge answered. "He did it all the time, dropping fake tips to throw people off the trail. You're not the first group to come looking for him."

Predacon shrugged. "You coulda suggested it if you were so bored, Tarannie," he told Tarantulas.

Waving off Obsidian's caution with one indifferent swipe of the hand, he transformed into vehicle mode and followed off behind his colleagues. A squad of motorcycle Vehicons fell in around them, forming an escort of sorts.

When Scorponok deployed his drones, Predacon snorted. "Am I the only one who doesn't have an army of miniature versions of himself that he carries around with him everywhere he goes?" he asked rhetorically.

He floated past Thrust as he departed, and asked the other Decepticon, "You coming? Could be fun."

Brick shrugged. "I don't know either," he admitted to Sixshot, "but I figure a guy like you can figure it out. I mean, you're loads smarter than us Vehicons, right? I mean, other than Hammer. He's pretty bright."

Starscream grinned as he followed the other seeker off the bridge. "Oh, I know Iacon," he assured Thundercracker. "Trust me, the Autobots won't know what hit them. You set off those booms of yours in an enclosed space and there won't be any guards left to stop this 'Skywarp' from walking right out the front door."

And that'll show that droning idiot Shockwave who's boss!

(OOC: Shhhh! :glance: )

"I don't think I care for your tone, runt," Skyquake told Dirge as he glared down at the other Transformer. "You're not the first recruit who's bragged about a direct line to Megatron. Some of them were even telling the truth. But you know what? They're all Decepticons now. Because we're at war, and we're done asking politely. Either you put on a purple badge and shoot Autobots, or the guys with purple badges shoot you. There's no room for neutrality on Cybertron anymore."

He jerked his thumb at the grunt that Dirge was harassing. "This idiot here? He's managed to let our friend Knock Out slip at least twice. And he's far from the only one. It seems the good doctor has an idea of how to play the game...which is why I'm here. Because I'm apparently the only one in this entire unit who isn't useless!" He glared a Dirge. "So you don't want to get thrown in with the grunts? Good. Prove you're better than them. Help me bring Knock Out in and I'll make sure you find your way into one of our elite air squadrons. That is what all you seekers dream of, isn't it?"

Scorponok glanced at the motorcycle Vehicons. "Who painted these guys pink?" He wondered out loud, glancing at Predacon, then shook his head. "Why do I even ask."

The former Senator shrugged as the scorpion drone scuttled around Scorponok's arm to settle on his back. "I have no idea what you are talking about. I turn into a construction vehicle, and Tarantulas turns into a motorcycle. Although I have to admit my own alternate mode was partially the basis for the drones' design..."

Sixshot shrugged at Brick. "Don't sell yourself short, brother. You've pointed out a lot of things I would not have picked out otherwise. This will... give me something to ponder about in my spare time, at least."

The six-changer glanced at Hammer, presumably still giving orders at the other Vehicons. "He has settled into his new job remarkably well."

Clench walked into the Nemesis, the warmth at being in command, a position of real power after all this time, didn't touch his eyes. He stared down the soldier and barked out a command towards him, watching with amusement as the soldier dropped everything and ran to follow his orders.

Clench replied to Lugnut as he walked towards the bridge. "We should have it adequately staffed. The doctors are supposed to be healing as many as they can before we arrive in Iacon. As to who is there currently. I don't know. I have just arrived and have yet to make an inspection."

"Yes sir!" Dirge would reply sharply, as though he was already a member of the troops. He was smiling at Skyquake, despite being yelled at. Now he was starting to talk about what Dirge wanted. As Deathsaurus's body guard he would've been inducted as a Decepticon at some point anyways, but he still would've been the crime lord's bodyguard - Dirge wanted to be a lot more involved than that, and this would do it. All he needed to do was the easy task of outshining this incompetent peon.

"For starts you've got his addresses all wrong, which is exactly what he intended I bet," Dirge would speak, tossing the data-pad as though not caring about it anymore, and the grunt would have to scramble to catch it so it didn't break on the ground. Dirge himself was already walking away, heading the completely opposite direction of where the Decepticons would've started looking for Knockout. Dirge then looked back over his shoulder while still walking.

"Do I get a few of those drones to babysit me?" It wasn't something that he expected Skyquake to bother going along with himself. But then as little as he thought of his troops, and now having to rely on an outsider, the commander might come along anyways just to insure the incompetence didn't continue.

"As if I occupy myself with other people's relationships," Tarantulas replied to Predacon. "But I suppose I should thank you for arranging this little exercise for us. It's going to be sooo much fun."

Tarantulas shrugged in a way a motorcycle can shrug. "A spider-like alt form is an interesting alt mode I suppose," he continued. "I'll have to look into that sometime. After we destroyed the Autobots."

"I'm interested in how your drone will perform against the Autobot border patrol officers," Tarantulas said to Scorponok. "Don't think it'll be much of a challenge for them."

"Keep your distance when I do though," Thundercracker said to Starscream when the latter mentioned a sonic boom in an enclosed space as he walked towards the airlock.

"I don't want to end up accidentally cause you any harm in the process," he said to his fellow Seeker as he opened the airlock.

"Next stop: Iacon War Academy," and with that, Thundercracker transformed to jet mode and flew off.

"Some of them are orange," Predacon told Scorponok indifferently. "Don't ask me why. They came out of the Vector computer that way."

When the other scientist denied the similarity between himself and Tarantulas and their respective drones, Predacon just sighed. "Riiight. You have no imagination. They totally look like you! I mean, you're named Scorponok..."

He tilted toward Tarantulas. "See, he sees it! But then, he was always the fun one. Scorps, not so much. But either way, we'll make short work of the border guards, oh yes we will!"

(OOC: Should Team Science and their gang move over to the Iacon thread?)

"Spare time?" Brick pondered the idea for a moment before shrugging. "You mean we're going to get spare time eventually? All I've had time for so far is fighting and recruiting."

He glanced over at Hammer and felt a flush of pride at what his brother was doing, along with a smaller current of jealousy over the other Vehicon's advancement.

"Yeah, he's doing great. I don't know how he does it, though. Or why. If we were made from the same template, why does he like to give orders when I'm happier just following them? If you asked me to take charge I wouldn't know the first thing about being the boss other than what I've watched him do."

"Right. Well, I'll check it out when I get up there," Lugnut told Clench as he walked into the space elevator that led up to the orbital station the Nemesis was currently docked at. "The wannabe docs down at the palace are awful. Anything would be a step up from that, you know?"

Shockwave glanced over at Clench with his one glowing pink optic narrowed, acknowledging the other officer with a curt nod.

"Welcome aboard," he said with no inflection in his voice. "Ground troopers have assembled in hangar six for your inspection. Aerospace troops are in hangars four and nine. Drop ships are being fuelled in hangar two."

"Oh, don't you worry," Starscream said. The seeker transformed and flew off after Thundercracker, chuckling softly. "Just give me a bit of warning, and your booms won't even phase me. A little gift from Zeta Prime, you see...one that I plan to turn against his successor's minions!"

(OOC: And off to Iacon for them, too!)

Skyquake glared at the grunt. "You! Do you even have a name?" he wondered idly. "See this! Dirge has been a Decepticon for under fifteen seconds and he's already accomplished more in that time than you have in your entire tenure!"

Looking back at Dirge he said, "Take Idiot and his squad of Vehicons. Maybe he'll learn from you how a real Decepticon behaves. As much as I'd love to go with you and ensure that the job is done right, my presence would make it very clear to our quarry that we are wise to his game. So I'll stay here, shanghai anyone foolish enough to cross us into infantry duty, and make it look like we've got no clue where Knock Out is hiding."

Skyquake turned away, but called out over his shoulder, "But Dirge...don't fail me."

Dirge didn't answer Skyquake's barb about failure directly, but he did turn back around sharply and snap off a salute before continuing his path.

The grunt with the datapad looked mortified by the turn of events. "Sir! This mech was fired by Knock Out quite a while ago, he said so himself! How do we even know his information is anymore useful than the tips we've received?"

"I wasn't fired, I quit!" Dirge would snap, pausing and turning back around to glare at the grunt, as though offended by the remark. "He was too high-maintenance for an employer."

"Did he have too many enemies for the 'great Dirge' to keep up with?" the grunt barbed.

Dirge gave a brief snort. "I signed on to guard his chasis, not help him buff the hard-to-reach spots after hours. I'm a body guard, not a beauty assistant. He might be good at what he does, but he's a total priss."

The grunt shut up at this point. He looked as though he wanted to grumble something about Dirge looking so good only because of his history with the mech they were looking for, but decided it was best to keep his mouth shut and follow orders. He and the vehicons would quickly pick up their pace to catch up to and follow Dirge.

-------------------------

It would take a while for them to reach their destination, Dirge leading them back and forth through the winding maze of back alleys. Along the way Dirge had managed to take command of the operation, ordering vehicons to take up posts as certain areas that Dirge knew to be part of Knockouts usual escape routes.

They had visited a couple of spots already that Dirge new to be places Knock Out tended to stay, but both had been empty. They were now approaching the last location, and aside from himself and the grunt with the datapad, they had just a handful of Vehicons left. He directed two to come with them, and the rest he had watching the nearby area as they proceeded up to the last building.

It was a non-descript building, just like all the others, and after a moments search Dirge would find a hidden call button that was just out of sight behind a trash receptacle.

Inside the building, a red-plated form was busy with a buffing tool, cleaning away the last bit of the day's labor.

"Ah, nothing like a nice shining up to end the day," Knock Out commented happily to himself, for no other purpose than to hear his own voice. An instant after that and the buzzer from his call button outside would go off, indicating a visitor. "Sorry, clinic's closed. Come back again tomorrow," he called across the room, not really caring or knowing if the person outside could even hear him.

Knock Out had been about to resume his buffing, but a loud crash would cause him to drop his tool, and to look back sharply towards the entrance. He could see his front door off its hinges and coming his way, and it would be discarded shortly after by the blue form behind it. "Didn't I tell you that you needed to reinforce that one?"

"Well well, look what the scrapmetals drug in," Knock Out would comment archly, giving Dirge only the mildest of glares. "Things not working out for you and Deathy? Well I'm sorry, but I don't rehire former employees that easily. You want your job, you're gonna have to prove you're still fit for it."

Dirge grinned broadly, an expression that made Knock Out uncomfortable. "Oh, but I'm not here about my job. I'm here about yours."

Knock out looked suspiciously at Dirge, confused by his statement. It was then that he noticed the other forms that had entered the building behind Dirge, and the Decepticon logos they had on them...

Knock Out made a discomforted noise, starting to take steps back as the vehicons came up beside Dirge. "Well, I...I didn't realize you had made yourself some new...connections..." Knock Out spoke nervously.

"And you haven't changed much at all. Same building and everything. Though I would've expected a new body guard," Dirge told him cheerfully.

Knock Out by now had backed into a computer console, and as he looked briefly at it, his confidence seemed to return. "A new body guard? Please, after you Dirge, no-one could really measure up. Or down perhaps I should say," He barbed with a wave of his hand. "Besides, why hire another hanger-on, when for the same price I can install a security system that complains far less."

Dirge would try to make a grab for Knock Out, but the smaller mech had already pressed a button and bolted out of the way as some small auto-turrets sprang open from the walls and began firing on the Decepticon troops. The Vehicons would retaliate immediately, returning fire on the automated system, but Dirge would ignore the guns in favor of pursuing the fleeing doctor, knowing the guns all too well to be yet another distraction. Knock Out would have a head-start though, and Dirge would just catch sight of him fleeing through a passage that Dirge was not familiar with.

Uh oh, that's a new one. Looks like he did update a few things... Dirge considered grimly, keeping in hot pursuit.

Up ahead, Knock Out was royally miffed. It was Kaon all over again! Betrayed by an unhappy acquaintance, Decepticons hot on his heels, and a whole clinic full of equipment to write off - if this kept happening he was going to start seeing some serious trouble with his funds. Didn't they know how much it cost to replace all of that?!

Knock Out would keep running as he emerged from the passage, pleased to see no Decepticons waiting for him, but not breaking from his running speed once. He knew he could outpace Dirge, but he needed to get a good enough lead to lose him. There was but one obstacle in his way, some dirty transient that happened to be roaming the alleyways that made up his escape route.

"Out of the way, gutter trash!" Knock Out snarled, having every intention to plowing through the low-life that stood in the way of his freedom.

"I would imagine so, between campaigns. Besides, there is only so much planet to take over." Sixshot shrugged at Brick. "Like this. I suppose this is spare time, is it not? It is a period of time where we do not do work."

Sixshot shook his head. "Neither could I, Brick. If I was to be a leader, I can also only mimic what the Creators, the General or Hammer would do. We are both fighters." Sixshot frowned. "Being made out of the same template... probably just extends to our exostructure. I wouldn't be highly surprised if the Creators made a second six-changer and he turned out to have a radically different personality compared to myself."

Pause.

"That's what makes us individuals, I suppose. That's what makes us people."

Brick shuddered. "What do you suppose we'll do once we own the planet?" he asked Sixshot. "I mean, what use will we be?"

He nodded along with what the sixchanger said. "I suppose you're right. All the other Vehicons have their own personalities and stuff. I suppose Hammer's just different in a different way, you know? Maybe he takes after the Creators more than the rest of us, who knows?"

"There are no issues that I have been made aware of." Shockwave responded to Clench. "Forward scouts are coming into position now. I recommend giving them time to begin their work. We will then leave docks and head for Iacon, while General Obsidian's troops begin their overland assault. I estimate the Nemesis will be on station in under twenty minutes."

Lugnut swept into one of the ship's hangars, transforming to his massive robot mode and stalking past the wing of Vehicon jets that occupied the bay without a word. Exiting, he headed for the ship's medical suite and (hopefully) proper repairs.

The "transient" straightened to his full height as Knock Out walked by, tossing aside the tattered robe he'd been covering himself with to reveal a gleaming white finish with medium grey highlights.

"Trash this!" he barked as his pointed head smashed into the mouthy doctor's lower jaw with a satisfying thud. "Oh yeah! Score one for Ramjet!"

That Skyquake guy was right...this is the best job ever!

"You will be used. Enforcers, grunt work, clean-up, propaganda... the citizens won't always obey our Lord Megatron, and a marching army... a marching legion of Vehicons would serve well as a reminder that Megatron has people everywhere." Sixshot told Brick.

He paused.

What of him.

"As someone whose function is swift destruction and annihilation, however..."

Another pause.

"Maybe that is why they only made one of me, brother Brick. They only require me for a short while, and require you for something more long-term."

Sixshot frowned. "I suppose you are right about Hammer, although I have not seen any Vehicons other than you two display much of a characteristic beyond obedience." Pause. "It..."

What was the word? Disappoints? Disgusts? Annoys?

Saddens?

"I... I just wish more Vehicons were like you two." Sixshot finished. "Not that I am complaining about present company."

((OOC: For the record, Knock Out was running. Dirge's right behind him, remember ;) ))

Completely unprepared, Knock Out took the blow hard to the face, and was knocked-out immediately, staggering backwards and falling in a heep right at Dirge's feet.

Now it wasn't that Dirge wasn't happy that there was someone there to stop the fleeing doctor, but he hadn't been expecting another seeker, let alone one that had a chassis that was almost identical to his own.

Dirge would study Ramjet for a moment with a raised optic ridge before finally saying. "Who are you?"

He'd heard the spoken name, but the tone Dirge spoke in more implied 'what' are you.

Brick shook his head. "Sounds boring to me," he admitted. "But, hell, that'll take a while. Megatron probably won't need all of us anyway, so who knows? Maybe I'll find a job somewhere else. Lots of aliens up there," he gestured toward the sky, "that need killing, yeah?"

When Sixshot said that most of the other Vehicons didn't have much personality, Brick laughed. "Six, tell me...have you ever talked to the other Vehicons?"

Ramjet pounded his fists together, then gave Dirge a hearty slap on the back. "Did you see that? Dumb slug dropped like a sack of spare parts! Talk about a glass jaw!"

He made a taunting gesture down at Knock Out, but then a frown appeared on his face. "That is the guy we're looking for, right? And for that matter, who are you?" He gestured back towards himself, tapped his fresh-painted insignia and said, "Name's Ramjet. I'm the newest recruit on Team Decepticon. The big guy -- what was it? Skyquake? He's got a bunch of us around the building. Told me to wait back here and clobber anyone who came by and didn't turn into a jet."

He took a closer look at Dirge, then grinned. "Another seeker, eh? Lucky for you."
