Over the last month-ish, we picked up Justice League and The Last Jedi on blu-ray/digital.

I enjoyed Justice League. It got quite the bad rap from critics, etc., and I think that's somewhat justified, but I think most reviews were overly harsh simply because they were compared to the Marvel movies.

Not an acquisition, but I also watched Suicide Squad a couple weeks ago on Sling. Definitely not cinematic gold, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I don't think it's quite as horrid as most people made it out to be.

Guardians of the Galaxy. Only four years late, but my boss keeps telling me its great fun and that I'd love it.

It's not that bad, once you headcanon Andy Dwyer over Peter Quill and accept that the female characters are a post-Buffy PC blandness overload. It's certainly better than either of the first two Avengers films, which I realise is a low bar.

I found GOTG to be pretty forgettable, honestly. In fact I can't remember anything about the plot at all, or why the bad guy was after them. Or even what he looked like. Probably doesn't help that my wife and I watched it with a whole bunch of other Marvel movies when we had a big "catch up on superhero flicks" kick a while back, but even then I still remember what happened in Ant-Man, Deadpool and Doctor Strange.

GOTG2 is solid though, if for no other reason than how much they let Batista chew the scenery.

Bad guy was after them because conflict and he memorably looked nothing like Ronan the Accuser. It featured many memorable other characters like Green Black Widow, Tedious Redemptive Arc Woman played by the one everyone wanked over when she was in Doctor Who, Funny Aggressive Animal and the ultimate Disney-Marvel reduction of a character who has a single catchphrase.

I'm miles behind because I'm stingy AF, but my Marvel rankings of wot I have seen goes:
  1. Iron Man 3
  2. Civil War
  3. Winter Soldier
  4. Iron Man
  5. Ant-Man
  6. Doctor Strange
  7. GOTG
  8. First Avenger
  9. Homecoming
  10. Thor
  11. Iron Man 2
  12. Avengers
  13. Roger Corman F4
  14. TV Movie Captain America
  15. Thor - the Dark World
  16. Howard the Duck
  17. Age of Ultron

In keeping with the topic, it turns out my wife bought Ragnarok, so I wound up watching that yesterday. It's about ten times more entertaining than either of the previous (thoroughly boring) attempts to make a Thor movie. But it tries so hard to funny that the constant stream of jokes at the expense of it's characters quickly became really grating. They already had Jeff Goldblum in the movie, they didn't need to turn the entire main cast into socially-awkward quipping buffoons too.

I'd say it's an okay superhero comedy at best, though I suspect if I was a fan of the Thor comics I'd absolutely hate it.

Finally bought Blade Runner on blu-ray. Actually it's the 4K version, but only the Final Cut and it has all the different versions of the film on regular blu as well.

Star Wars! On Laserdisc!

I didn't actually buy my LD player to watch actual movies on, much less ones in CAV format, but if I knew things would come to this, I would've invested in a two-side player.

I certainly didn't expect to buy SW this way, I was content on settling on the limited edition DVDs - until I learned about the myriad of other problems with the THX transfers and chose to seek the earlier, Widescreen Collection releases from the US, shrinking aspect ratio and all - but then I saw the Japanese Special Collection releases on ebay at a very low starting bid and decided to go for it. Ended up winning all three movies for about 70 bucks.
