Hasbro reapplies for trademark "Sideswipe"

Hasbro have been using the spelling "Side Swipe" (two words) ever since the RID Spychanger (with the exception of the OTFCC 2003 exclusive and the Armada Super-Con, both of which seem to have been flukes that later got semi-fixed).

Now it seems they're going to reclaim the "Sideswipe" name proper.

For those who noticed, the name on the instructions for the Universe Deluxe found on Hasbro's website actually uses the single-word spelling.

Awesome. About time, too. Here's hoping they actually manage to get it.

Well, technically, there's no-one really to stop them. Anyone to oppose "Sideswipe" would have also opposed "Side Swipe" seven years ago. Alternatively, anyone registering anything that could pose a problem for "Sideswipe" between 2001 and now would have encountered problems with Hasbro's existing "Side Swipe" trademark.

Essentially, the only thing that has stopped Hasbro from pursuing the single-name spelling up until now was... well, money. Spending several hundred dollars just to get rid of a space in a name was just not worth the effort. Wonder what has changed.

... I just realized that this year's BotCon exclusive was called "Sideswipe" (single name) with a "registered"-® behind it.

However, considering Fun Publications also called two of last year's exclusives "Huffer®" and "Springer®", I'd chalk that up to "They don't know what the hell they're doing".

Maybe they just like the wee R with a circle round it, and think that's all there is to it.

There's just one problem with this: Slapping the "registered"-® behind a name you don't actually have registered with the USPTO is... illegal.

I'm pretty sure I've done the same at various points... Still, glad that space is gone, no more slavishly referring to figures as Side (leaves room, re-enacts title sequence of Catch Me If You Can) Swipe.
