Synopsis: Back in one of Earth's four major ice ages, the Transformers fight on Earth, before running low on energy and retreating to caves and stasis pods. Flash forwards to the 19th century, and a group of Autobots are awakened by the sound of railroad hammers. Elsewhere, an inventor called Tobias Muldoon is testing an experimental submarine, but it and his investment sink. The sub re-awakens the Decepticon Skywarp. Bumblebee brings Prowl and Ratchet back online, then disregards their assessment that the Autobots should wait another century before making contact. About to be seen by John Henry and the rest of the railroad crew, he reconfigures into a steam engine. After being humiliated and left penniless, Muldoon is walking the dock area when he's approached by Shockwave in the form of a gunship, who offers assistance in re-shaping the future of Earth...

Ongoing human characters include the railroad workers John Henry, Cletus and Brawley, the authors Mark Twain and Jules Verne, inventor Tobias Muldoon, his love interest Kitty and her father. Synopsis: Soldiers wait outside Arizona, with orders to stop an unscheduled train — but they don't even slow the Astrotrain down. Elsewhere, the train chartered by Mark Twain's party converges with Bumblebee's convoy, and the two groups form an easy alliance. The Autobots transform and they're watched by a station clerk who sends a telegram through to Bonaventure and Vanfleet, Starscream's human allies. A Decepticon blimp is dispatched to bomb the Autobot railcars, but is fought off by Ironhide. Their last hope, Bumblebee and John Henry outrace the Astrotrain and (using the railroad man's knowledge of the route) switch the track to a dead end — whereupon it careens over the buffers into a deep ravine. The Autobots too return to deactivation.
