Suggest me some original music and win a prize!

Post by Ackula »

Ok, someone here has to know of or like a band that is not rehashed shit or mainstream crap. Suggest to me a band/artist/musician that is doing or has done something actually original and likable.

I'm getting an iPod for Xmas and I am trying to throw some shit in iTunes that is new as I grow tired of the 100+ GB of music I already have on my PC (90% ripped from my actual CDs) and want something fresh and new.

Please provide links and/or youtube videos of your suggestions, the person who shows me the most original, non-shitty music will win a fabulous prize mailed to you from Inflatable Dalek*

Any genre of music is fair to suggest as I listen to a wide range of things from metal and Jpop to Alt-Country and classical, even a bit of goth and industrial, ect.

*Prize non-refundable, size and style may vary. Actual delivery of prize may be charged to recipient. Prize may or may not contain peanuts or other tree nuts, or may be manufactured in a plant containing nuts. Actual prize may or may not exist, use once and destroy.

Try Ayreon. It is all original. Albums being: Human Equation, Final Experiment, Flight of the Migrator (think that is the album name) part 1 and 2, Into the Electric Castle, 101100 (think that is the title name) and then the same band, but different name Star One.

Ah, I love the sharing of musical tastes.
I personally enjoy Grails a lot since they were recommended to me by the guy at my local record shop. They are one of those crazy progressive instrumental rock groups, with everything being a little dissonant and whatnot, but I can listen to any of their albums for hours.

My Personal Favorite: Dead Vine Blues

On the Goth side of things, I've posted this artist before but I feel like I should share it again. Sopor Aeternus is genius IMO, but you'll just have to decide for yourself. The later albums are my favorites, as they are more "light-hearted".

Just ignore the videos and enjoy the music

Not very original to me in all honesty, and it sounds like crap to me. Sorry, but you don't win, I've heard this done before, much better.
Ostentatious wrote:I personally enjoy Grails a lot
Indeed this is pretty decent stuff that I can listen to, but not very original once again. Has been done many times before, but I'm gonna look into one of their albums, thanks :)

As for Sopor Aeternus, I have heard their stuff before, not very original, but not that bad. At least they have their tongue stuck firmly in cheek.
Slayer-Fan123 wrote:A bunch of bands I already own and/or hate
Sorry, but you did not provide me with one single band I haven't heard of before, as a matter of a fact I have seen 8 of those bands live, and Slayer is certainly not one of the best ones live. Nile, by the way, their singer/songwriter is from my home state and is a nice guy, his solo material is much better than the death metal shit they pumped out.

Also Glenn Danzig is an amazing asshole in person, and he is 4 foot tall. He wrote some great punk songs in the early 80's though.

Please...keep it coming..I'm hoping something magical will happen....

Meh.
Nothing wrong with them, but I know their stuff really well. As a matter of a fact Duane Denison, their guitar player, toured with my favorite act, Hank III, at one point. I met him after one of the Hank III shows as well, nice guy.

I just thought it would work, because nobody I know has heard of them...

Slightly off topic, Tokio Hotel is one the worst rock groups to have ever been formed. But thats my opinion!

In response to your edited post in which you listed more bands, I'm afraid I've already heard all of them before as well. What I'm looking for is something that is completely original, meaning not been done before...

Ironically, despite being the one sending out the prize I'm completely tone deaf and judge all music on how much I'd **** the singer/women in the video. Makes for a happy, simple life.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned these here before, but for original and good, you can't go wrong with Woven Hand. (Here's another one.) It takes a few listens, but it's amazingly addictive. (Here's a few more chances to hear.)
And, even though they're covers, you can't go wrong with Hurra Torpedo:
Total Eclipse of the Heart
All the Things (S)he Said

And I'm sure you've heard of them before, but check out Einsturzende Neubauten. They range from noisy clang-clang industrial in their early stuff to performance art/poetry later on.

(If I win, I'll just call it even for the $10 I owe Dalek.)

You'd think on a Transformers forum someone would have mentioned the band Robots In Disguise. Its how I got my user name.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip.
LCD Soundsystem
CSS
Justice
The Hours

I'm too lazy/busy to dig out links right now. :(

Original's tricky these days. Most stuff's been done before in some shape or form. Most of what's above has been done before, but all of them either bring something new and unique to it, or do it exceptionally well. I'd also recommend the new Bloc Party album "Intimacy" for similar reasons - it's not what you'd expect from the band, but once you get past it it's really good.

Have also just gotten into Metronomy, who'll probably be massive in a year from now.
