because they were smart enough to let the Americans do something that menial while they were better spending their time developing our current everyday devices

True, true, they probably tricked the Americans into thinking that it was a US idea, too.
They didn't invent much of our electronics, though. They just saw what other people did, then made vastly superior, less expensive versions, then proceeded to destroy the inferior North American companies that competed with them (how many TVs are made in US nowadays?)
