Yeah, they've pretty much given it away there - and it's still up with their knowledge.... free CS2 anyone?

The EULA wasn't written for this kind of situation, basically. I'm pretty happy with old versions of Corel PhotoPaint (it's not like much has actually changed in terms of concepts) so will give this a whirl.

Pending legal test, this could be good for non-profits and education too.

Well, as someone who wants to use it purely for amateur toying around, this would be great. I couldn't ever justify the cost before unless I was earning from it.
To be onest, if they'd even offered the 7 year old stuff for about 20 quid I'd have been happy to pay. Obviously with the prices they charge they don't care about casual consumers anyway, and professionals will alway want the top of the line stuff, so I don't see how they could possibly lose. At the worst, people will toy about on the free stuff, one or two will becdome semi-pro and bingo, that's a few more sales for the up to date stuff.

p.s. I typed all of this after my birthday party at 4 am. Drunk posting doesn't have to be totally retarded and clumsy.

I use GIMP for image manipulation. Very well featured, and free too.

Single-window mode is a welcome step forward for Gimp. It's a lot less user-hostile in general (and bit more polished) these days, but still mostly oriented towards manipulating existing images and some of the dev attitudes -- no app should require tutorials on how to draw lines and shapes, for instance, this sort of thing should be easily discoverable -- are a bit jaw dropping.

As far as bitmap editors go...

Paint.NET -- http://www.getpaint.net/ -- is a weird mix of polished features and awkwardness, unless the text handling (in particular) has improved by now.

Fotografix -- http://lmadhavan.com/software/fotografix/ -- amazing as a go-anywhere tiny editor that supports layers.

Serif PhotoPlus -- http://www.serif.com/free-photo-editing ... SPHOTOPLUS -- isn't completely shit.

Pretty cool. I still use Paintshop Pro 7 and Gimp for a lot of stuff. I used to use PS back late 90s and early 2000 until I lost my disc. Thanks for the share.
