That doesn't seem to be the case as the invite I sent to Nabeel's hotmail address worked out just fine.

You should get a batch of invites soon. I think sending/receiving email increases the rate at which you get more invites, but I'm not clear on how it works.

Are most of you unfamiliar with how spammers get your email addresses in the first place? Posting them in the fake@fakeaddress.com format allows their bots to snag your address. Much safer to do like what Maki did and have it fake[at]fakeaddress.com.

When you get them, in the blue header above your inbox will be the following message:

You have [x] Gmail invitations. Invite a friend to join Gmail!
