Animated in Japan

Post by Nevermore »

Was originally posted in the "rest of the Animated toys" thread, but I'd say the Japanese release warrants its own thread.

Official website is up:

The cartoon will air in Spring.

Hmm . . . perhaps if Japan enjoys it, we might get some Headmasters/ Beast Wars style unnofficial sequel?

They're also getting TF:A keychains:

And apparently Bulkhead has been named "Ironhide" in the Japan version. I wonder if we should expect that we'll get different names for the other characters too, like Energon had. Convoy? Rodimus Minor? Roadbuster? Too bad there's no Rijie or Ligerjack in the series.

Well, "Optimus Prime", "Bumblebee", "Ratchet", "Prowl" and "Starscream" are still unchanged.

Urgh - is that me or does that completely not fit with the "straight from the cel" look of the figures?

Ugh, Bulkhead's coloring looks way off.

I guess those that assumed Takara would add random chrome weren't too far off.

And blue Starscream. I thought they'd fix that, seeing how they released Astrotrain in grey for the sake of toon "accuracy".

Huh . . . I know its pointless and unnecessary, but those shiny metal figures actually look quite purdy

Yeah, those just look odd, totally pointless to make them metallic, and it really screws up some of the colors like with Bulkhead and Bumblebee. Takara really dropped the ball on those, I imagine the Japanese fans who were really into Animated when it came out, imported our versions anyway, but those are just awful..can't imagine them selling very well.

Seems some more of the Animated figures will have different names:

http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/menu ... egory=6153

Lockdown is "Rockdown"; Lugnut is "Ragknights"; Jetfire is "Jetfighter"

TA11 is Dargi (Dirge, perhaps?); TA12 is Archi; TA18 is Sunaru; TA18 is Autobot Swarp

Also, Blackout is on the list (TA20). Wonder if they get him before we do.

And there's a few more two-packs than we got.

Archi=Black Arachnia? Sunaru=Snarl? Swarp=Swoop?
It's kind of like playing that game Mad Gab. Got any more?

No, they won't. All those names are extremely awfully romanized by someone with exceptionally bad Katakana skills. The only name "changes" are the prefixes for "Decepticon Shockwave" and "Autobot Swoop". "Ragknights" and "Jetfighter" sound like bad Babelfish translations.

Does anyone remember the old "Jet Rock" story from the early days of Galaxy Force news?

I also remember one member being absolutely adamant that, until the person who posted those names retracted the information, they names were absolutely 100% correct and refused to believe otherwise unless given some translation software not programmed by us.

Wooha.

It's not like katakana's particularly difficult.

Thinking about it, I could see "Showwave" coming from a bad fax print where the "ku" looks similar to the following "u" (though there should be a small "tsu" before the "ku").

A really bad fax could also explain someone mistaking the final "a" in "Jetfire" for a "ta", thus resulting in "Jetfighter".

I'm still lost trying to find out where the "s" at the end of "Ragnights" is coming from, though. "Lugnut" should end with a "to", unless TakaraTomy decided to call him "Lugnuts", which would explain the "tsu". "Knight" would require a "nai" instead of "na", though. How does one get "itsu" out of "to"?

Everything else ("Dargi", "Archi", "Rockdown", "Sunaru") is just bad imagination, and "Swarp" is the eternal classic among fandom misconceptions about Japanese TF names, right alongside "Breast Off".

Helpful link so everyone understands my geekspeak!

Some new pics up at Amazon.co.jp

I'm not sold on the shiny goodness of these figures, but it really works on the Voyager Megatron.
