Financially speaking, this is probably a smart mold to make simply because they can release it as one seeker and then repaint it twice more without people demanding, "Where's the trailer?"

Not to mention with slight remolding to the wings:
Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust.

So, without going to the really bizzare extremes (starscreams ghost) you can get 7 versions of this mould with minimal effort.....

Especially when you consider what no-brainers the original trio are... it seems* like Skywarp/Thundercracker recolours are a formality whenever a new Starscream comes out.

Not really unreasonable, if you think about it. If it it turns out to be false, no real harm is done since BBTS doesn't bill you until the item actually arrives. If it's real, offering a preorder sooner than any other online store can only benefit BBTS since people aren't likely to preorder the same item from multiple sites.

It's kind of a, "first to serve gets the money" type thing.

But, yeah, it is a bit quick on the draw.

Yeah, but it's still jumping in early. The point is, it isn't official yet. Regardless of whether it can be reversed with no damage done is sort of a moot point.

It also tends to hurt their credability when 'new preorders' show up. These days, you expect BBTS to take orders for items that may never exist--hence, how many people really bother anymore?
