[Rumour] BWTF.com report that Dreamwave have possibly gone under.

Post by Halfshell »

12/22/04: Dreamwave Productions out of business?
A rumor has surfaced from a source that Dreamwave Productions, publisher of the current Transformers comic books, has gone out of business. This is only rumor now pending official announcement.

Nothing even remotely resembling solid, but still amusing enough for me to blab to all and sundry.

Hasn't this happened before?
Skill without imagination gives us craftsmanship, which produces many useful objects such as wickwork picnic baskets. Imagination without skill gives us Modern Art.

Mm. Probably. For my part, I'll believe it when I see it. Granted, I'll take note of the rumor. But at the end of the day a rumor is just that- a rumor. I'll start becoming more concerned when something more solid sufaces.

I was just about to post this.

This surprises me for two reasons:

1) Ben is currently working as an advisor for Furman's Beast Wars series.
2) Ben usually only posts "official" news, no rumors, unconfirmed stuff and the likes.

So, I seriously don't know what to think about this.

All the signs are there and the writing is on the wall:

-TF comic sales slowly dropping month by month.
-No other DW comic titles selling well (unlike Devil's Due)
-DW's major players not getting paid.
-Pat Lee doing freelance work for Marvel. (I mean come on, if you own a company, are you going to work for others under any conditions?)
-DW message board mysteriously down
-No G1 ongoiong solicitations for the near future and no hint of the second issue of Pat Lee's TF-GiJoe crossover

I pray its rumor, and I hope DW clarifies it as such, but in all honesty, should we be surprised? DW's major problem is they didn't snag other licences to survive. You can't survive on Transformers alone.

We might ask ourselves why Ben Yee decided to post this on his site. I can't see him continuing any sort of business with DW (consultant for BW, press releases etc.) even if this is bulljive. So why did he post it?

They did it to them selves. Flooding the market with a product only die hard fans would care about. Even though most of them went meh. It's hard to imagine trying to meet deadlines when you are counting on exclusive covers to make ends meat.

1 - I would if the conditions were nice...and freelance work is pretty nice and certainly not bad to have on the side even if you're the head of a crappy Lee-filled company.

2 - I thought they were shut down by that worm that's going around shutting down messageboards.

They seem like they're way behind on everything. When I was still buying them, they were three months behind at one point . . .

Yeah, their track record with forum software (heck, with websites in general) is appalling. It's pure luck as far as I can tell that the forum was kept on a separate server account (dreamwaveprod.net rather than .com or .ca) and the rest of everything didn't get wiped and defaced.

Nasty thing:

The worm spreads via phpBB prior to 2.0.11; it isn't directly related to the general vulnerabilities addressed within php 4.3.9 and earlier, although that's also potentially a serious threat in the wild at the moment.

so DW goes belly up, we go without the comic again, because any major production company such as marvel or DC will likely not touch it with a ten foot pole... meh

I can't say I'm surprise.

tho.. it MAY give don the chance to finish Macromasters.
