We do not speak of The Beast for it is an abomination.

Although personally I think it's awesome in a "Keep bugging us and you won't like what you get" kind of way.

See, things are tough for UK fans. Not only are the prices of figures high, later waves released in a scattershot fashion, comics often difficult to find if you don't have a specialist store nearby etc, we also get exclusives like that...

The thing with The Beast is, he actually manages to go all the way through bad right round to being awesome. From the name that took three seconds to think of (who came up with it, Don Glutt?) to the fact he seems to be shooting spunk everywhere, he completely pwns everything that came out of the contemporary Dreamwave comics.

I advise against that.

Yeh, while I'd say the Beast is probably the most hilarious thing ever due to clearly being the mix of a very very poor fanfic writer with just the right amount of connections and a complete lack of self-awareness, "awesome" is probably not the word.

Seeing as it's a free comic that, IIRC, is now out of print and will never, ever be reissued, part 1 can be found here: -

Bear in mind that it's genuinely bad-bad.

I downloaded both issues via torrent.

Hilarious, innit? In the first issue after a bit of pointless angsting Grimlock combiens into Beast and proves himself to be the most horribly-written fancharacter by killing the sum total of all season two Decepticons.

Then in the second part, Optimus' grand plan of defeating this killer enemy? Drop him down a cliff. What.

Something author said about the readers, who didn't like his comic:

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Darren_Jamieson
So you like your stories, comics and movies to be explained to you before you begin. You like what is termed as an 'info dump' so that you have all of the facts laid out before you at the outset, rather than be tasked with working things out as the story unfolds. You like 'by the numbers' story telling. Luckily, you're in the minority. Darren "TheTF.net" Jamieson explaining why writing an incoherent story is supposed to be a "challenge" for intelligent readers, "Anyone afraid of the Dinobot combiner?" - TFW2005, September 2009.

I love that quote; I mean the thing's virtually plotless, I don't think following the story was the problem readers had with it.

I still love you Beasty.

I'm fairly sure I have read the comic scans at some point but can't recall a thing about it beyond the sheer daftness of the combined Dinobots. I'm not rushing to rediscover it.

That's faint praise at best though you've got to admit. Still The Beast should show up again. He's like the Ultimate Warrior of the Transformers, so batshit insane and ridiculous that he somehow becomes almost fun to watch.

The Beast probably isn't a homophobic steroid abuser who hates Hulk Hoagan though. So this analogy only goes so far and no further

Wow, I had no idea that the dinobots ever combined, let alone combined into something as...I dunno...weird, powerful, maniacal...as The Beast.

I find it strange that their combination resulted in such an aggressive, mindless, violent character. That doesn't make much sense to me.

...it makes perfect sense. Grimlock was hardly an Autobot for most of G1. According to the cartoons, all of the dinobots where hardly functional morons with aggression problems, often lashing out at each other and anyone else that annoys them.

Combiners tend to mix the personalities of all the members involved into one mind. However the parts all the members share, personality-wise, are the dominant traits of the gestalt. Predaking is a consummate hunter, Brutacus is a highly destructive force intent on blowing the crap out of anything in front of him, Computron over thinks things, Superion is a joke, and so on.

So, combine 5 violent, aggressive, and stupid minds who aren't above giving their allies a lashing and viola, one giant, really stupid, aggressive, and hard to kill monster.

Good thing too.

Means we don't have to endure people with the opinion of "yeah, it's an awful idea, executed badly in an appalling story... but it looks ****ing COOL man!!!!!"

You know it would happen. It's basically how we let Dreamwave happen. It's the ethos that IDW run with. It's why people rate Call of the Primitives. At least we took this much from them.
