On the Nature of Canonicity

Post by Selkadoom »

Now this is something that has been gnawing at me for a bit and I just had to come and ask about if you guys could understand.

Has there ever been a point in any fandom where something that wasn't part of the established lore and was instead and outside thing brought in that some people immediately consider canon to the universe?

The example that sparked this is relating to Michael Kirkbride, former writer on The Elder Scrolls who has made quite a bit of out of game text lore that some fans treat as word of god lore despite it seemingly existing to mock the lore Bethesda went with instead.
