Origins of the "Bad Dubs":

The english dub for Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory were done for a Hong Kong television station called "Star TV". Believe it or not, they ARE professionals and they STILL get work. They dubbed all of the Heisei-era Godzilla films as well as many martial arts movies (including the live action Dragonball movie). They're based in Hong Kong.

The translations are poor as most of them are the actual literal translation. Hence why they're very boring and/or make no sense. They also, for reasons unknown, changed names. Some really random crap like Broadcast being called "Billy", Blur being called "Willy", Metroplex being called "Phillip" and all the Trainbots being called "Grimlock". Some of the wrong names were actually due to noble attempts to translate the names from the Japanese pronunciation. They called Meister (Jazz in the US) "Maestro" and they called Dashtaker "Batchtaster". Hey, at least they tried. Also, they decided to use the ENGLISH names for all the characters in their dub of Masterforce. So no, that is NOT Optimus Prime, that's Jinrai. And Nightbeat's still a guy......

Now, this is not to be confused with the Fan-dubbing project that is on-going for Victory and BW Neo.

So what I need is some help on questions that keep coming up, here's what I have so far:
Well, I can give you some short-hand answers for now.

Origins of the "Bad Dubs":

The english dub for Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory were done for a Hong Kong television station called "Star TV". I don't know the name of the actual dubbing group, but we usually just refer to them as the "Star TV People". And, believe it or not, they ARE professionals and they STILL get work. They dubbed all of the Heisei-era Godzilla films as well as many martial arts movies (including the live action Dragonball movie). They're based in Hong Kong, or so I'm lead to believe. See, this works quite nicely (I was going to do it, but Spengs saved me so much work! ).

The only thing I can point out is that you missed Operation Combination in your timeline. But that's a minor thing.

Hey mods-that-be! Can this get stickied at the top of the forum?

"Planet Sydnia" (or was it "Cygnia"?) was apparently named "Athenia" in the Japanese version.

Ahhhhh THANK YOU. That's been gnawing away at me ever since Brave Maximus got me thinking about.

But I'm much too lazy to go watch my Headmaster tapes.

Apparently, Athenia is supposed to be the same planet that the Galactic Olympics were held on in "Five Faces of Darkness." Although it doesn't look anything like it.

Yeah, I was watching Five Faces pt1 on my Japanese set and noticed that the other day. Not the Headmasters-reference, as I'd forgotten the name, but the fact that it was called "Athenia" and was a bad pun on "Athens" (Olympics joke!).

At least they kept some obscure continuity; that's pretty cool.

Default Japanese Transformers

I was in tfkenkon.com,saw a lot of different bits, from the
north american sights. Two that are worth a mention, among many:
woolymammoth Optimus. Wow. Animal/Robot combo is unique. Fits
well.The blue/lime subaru impreza:Smoke screen,and the actually
car. All the rest of the custom transformers are stories in themselves.
wow.
