Personal Profile: Scorponok was and still is the largest Decepticon toy ever made, which should be considered a great honour. He was released in the 1988 toy line as a part of the first generation of Headmasters. He was the largest Headmaster toy to only have one Headmaster. He is binary bonded to Lord Zarak, a Nebulon, which is a race similar to humans. He was one of the few characters from after season 3 to play a large role in the comic run, and a major factor in the US Rebirth mini-series as well as the Japanese Headmasters series.

Cartoon Bio: Lord Zarak was the leader of a small group of paraplegic Nebulons known as the Hive. The Hive only consisted of about a dozen members, but was the ruling body of the Planet Nebulos. They controlled the population of Nebulos from an underground city with machines that they had built to ensure that the Nebulons kept in line. The dictatorship of the Hive didn’t sit well with the Nebulons, and they tried to rebel. The rebellion, however, was never able to overcome the Hive’s machines. Zarak was unpleasantly surprised when the Nebulon rebellion leaders had formed an alliance with a group of Cybertronians called the Autobots. The Autobots had binary bonded with the Nebulons by becoming their Headmasters. The Autobot Headmasters were easily able to overcome the Hive’s machines. Luckily for Zarak and his cohorts, another group of Cybertronians called the Decepticons also arrived on Nebulon. Zarak persuaded the Decepticons acting leader, Cyclonus, to binary bond with the members of the Hive, who were given suits that greatly increased their physical capabilities.The Hive and the Decepticons binary bonded as Headmasters and Targetmasters as well. Lord Zarak chose not to binary bond with any Decepticon. Instead he chose to reformat the city that the Hive occupied into a giant Decepticon that he would be binary bonded to. This new Decepticon would be known as Scorponok, and would have a base and scorpion mode, as well as a robot mode. During a fight between the Autobot and Decepticon Headmasters and Targetmasters, Scorponok made his debut with Zarak as his Headmaster.Scorponok easily defeated the Autobots and then declared that the Decepticons would leave Nebulos and ‘head’ for Cybertron. Upon reaching Cybertron, Lord Zarak met the Decepticon leader, Galvatron, who was on the verge of overthrowing the Autobot occupancy of Cybertron. Galvatron was furious with his Decepticons because he was disgusted with organic creatures and hated the idea of them bonding with his Decepticons. Lord Zarak and Galvatron put there differences aside when the Autobot Headmasters and Targetmasters, led by Optimus Prime, returned to Cybertron. The Decepticons, with Scorponok’s help, were able to keep the Autobots at bay. Unfortunately for them, Spike and the Autobot, Cerebros, appeared on Cybertron with a new battle station. That battle station turned out to be the Autobot, Fortress Maximus. Scorponok and Fortress Maximus collided in a true ‘Clash of the Titans’. Scorponok was able to hold his own for a little while, but was eventually defeated by the Autobot giant. As the Decepticons retreated into Scorponok’s base mode, they were knocked into deep space by the power of the Plasma Energy Chamber. Scorponok and the rest of the Decepticon army were last seen flying through deep space, with Galvatron swearing revenge on all the Autobots.

“Take over? I can’t! Don’t you see? I’m Scorponok in appearance alone. At heart I’m just Lord Zarak… a man! A weak, flawed man. This isn’t my war. No! Are you just going to stand here Zarak? Watch your warriors fight and die? When I binary bonded to Scorponok I did more than just add a head to a body, I became him… the real Scorponok wouldn’t have turned and fled. He’d have accepted his responsibilities, his fate! Can I then do less? I think not! Unicron! I’m coming for you!”
